THE ASIA-PACIFIC RESEARCH UNIT (APRU), a unit within the School of Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia, aims at promoting research of the Asia-Pacific region encompassing East and Southeast Asia, Australasia, Southwest Pacific, and the countries of the western coast of North and South America. The areas of studies include History, Politics, Languages, Literature, Philosophy, Religions, Environment, Ethnology, Anthropology, Geography, Culture, Heritage, War and Conflict Resolution, and the Arts.

 

APRU intends to internationalize the research undertaken in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) to a worldwide academic audience. APRU shall initiate linkages between scholars in USM and counterparts in other Malaysian institutions of higher learning as well as those in the Asia-Pacific region and also beyond.

 

PRINCIPLE OBJECTIVES

 

bullet To promote multi-disciplinary research between the School of Humanities and other schools/centres within USM

 

bullet To develop inter-university ties between USM and other Malaysian and foreign universities and institutions through research, teaching, and staff/student exchange programmes

 

bullet To foster joint research related activities with other institutions, organizations and research bodies within and outside Malaysia

 

bullet To facilitate publication and dissemination of research findings/output and from other intellectual activities (public lectures; proceedings of conferences, symposiums, seminars, workshops, discussion groups, etc.)

 

Through the initiative and activities of APRU, USM scholars and their research accomplishments in the humanities, the arts and social sciences would receive wider dissemination of their works, thence recognition and acceptance in the global academic community.

TYPES OF PUBLICATIONS

 

In order to facilitate publication and disseminate research findings, APRU undertakes the following types of publication:

 

I. Occasional Paper Series

Word limit: 8 000 to 10 000 words

 

Edited working papers from seminars, symposiums, conferences, workshops, and discussion groups

 

II. Reports Series

Word limit: 3 000 to 8 000 words

 

Field Reports Series

Summary of findings from field studies/work

 

Interim Reports

Preliminary findings of projects/programmes that await completion

 

III. Translation Series

Word limit: Open

 

Significant works in other languages that merit a wider audience and dissemination to be translated into English

 

IV. Monograph Series

Word limit: 80 000 to 100 000 words

 

An academic paper on a single specialized topic/subject

 

V. International Journal of Asia-Pacific Studies (IJAPS)    

 

A peer reviewed, bi-annual (May and November) academic e-journal focusing on Asia, Australasia and the Pacific Rim regions of the Americas in the fields of politics, history, indigenous languages and literature, religions, environment, ethnohistory, anthropology, cultural heritage, socio-economic development, war and conflict resolution, pre-history and archaeology, and the arts. IJAPS undertakes to publish articles based on original research of the highest scholarship. An Editorial Panel and an International Advisory Board assist the Chief Editor.

 

All APRU publications are in the English medium in line with its major objective of disseminating research findings in USM to a worldwide academic audience.

COORDINATOR OF APRU AND CHIEF EDITOR OF IJAPS

 

Ooi Keat Gin holds a doctorate in Southeast Asian Studies (History) with wide experience in research and has also developed a network with various institutions, foundations, and organizations in East Asia, Europe, North America, and Australasia. He has held fellowships at institutions such as the Australian War Memorial (Canberra, Australia) and the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) (Amsterdam and Leiden, The Netherlands). Dr Ooi is scheduled to take up a Fellowship in Indonesian Studies with the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation (NIOD), Amsterdam, The Netherlands in 2006. Besides having numerous articles in academic journals (Journal of Southeast Asian Studies, Modern Asian Studies, Indonesia and the Malay World, Borneo Research Bulletin, etc.), he has published with Oxford, Macmillan (now Palgrave), Ohio, ABC-CLIO, Academia Sinica, and others. He is the editor of the award-winning pioneering work entitled Southeast Asia: A Historical Encyclopedia, From Angkor Wat to East Timor, 3 vols. (Santa Barbara, California: ABC-CLIO, 2004) that witnessed a launching in Europe in Amsterdam by IIAS, Leiden, The Netherlands and in Asia in Bangkok jointly by Thammasat University and Chulalongkorn University. Dr Ooi is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (London, UK) and of the Faculty of Politics and International Studies, University of Hull (Hull, UK). He is now an associate professor in the School of Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, Malaysia.

PAST ACTIVITIES

 

2003

On 11-13 December 2003, APRU together with the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands organized a workshop entitled ‘Brokers of Capital, Labour and Knowledge’. It was held in the School of Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, Malaysia.

 

2004

APRU was officially launched on 20 July 2004. In conjunction with the launch, APRU organized its inaugural international conference with the theme “Southeast Asia since 1945: Reflections and Visions”, 20-23 July 2004. There were 8 concurrent panels, viz. Ecology and the Natural Environment, History and Its Lessons, Language and Education: Speakers, Audience and Contents, Culture and Heritage, Literature: Identity, Globalization and Vision for the Future, Wither Morals, Ethics and Values, and Prosperity and Backwardness: Economic Growth and Development.

 

2005

APRU Book Workshop Series was initiated with three proposed tentative working titles viz. ‘Exploring Space: Trends in Linguistics, Literature and Translation’, ‘Ecology and the Natural Environment: Southeast Asia since 1945’, and ‘Islam in the 21st Century’. The majority of participants are drawn from the School of Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia.

In November IJAPS made its debut appearance with Volume 1 (Inaugural Issue) that is accessible at www.usm.my/ijaps/

 

FORTHCOMING ACTIVITIES

 

Joint Research (2006-2008)

 

Plans are underway to initiate joint research ventures with the Centre for Asia Pacific Social Transformation Studies (CAPSTRANS), University of Wollongong, Australia and the European Centre, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand.
